dB Meter: A Handy App to Stay Ahead of Track Noise Checks

Noise management has become an unavoidable topic in motorsport. Whether you're at a trackday or on a driving course, respecting the sound limits set by circuits is now essential if you want to drive with peace of mind. To help drivers plan ahead, there's a simple solution available to everyone: the dB Meter app, available on the App Store and Google Play (Decibel X).
Why measure your car's noise before coming to drive?
Every circuit sets its own noise constraints. At Torque Drift School, some tracks call for particular vigilance, notably:
Vaison Piste: limit set at 88 dB
Other circuits: limit set at 95 dB
A car that's too loud can be refused access to the track or excluded partway through the day. Anticipating your car's noise level therefore helps you avoid nasty surprises, adjust your setup (exhaust, chicane, silencer) and prepare for your visit in the best possible conditions.
dB Meter: a simple, accessible app
dB Meter turns your smartphone into a sound level meter. Using the built-in microphone, the app gives you an estimate of the noise level in decibels (dB) in just a few seconds.

Real-time noise level readout
Recording of peak values
A word of caution, though: a mobile app is no substitute for a certified sound level meter. The readings are intended above all as a rough guide ideal for anticipating and comparing different setups on your vehicle.
How to use dB Meter effectively before a session
For a reading that's as consistent as possible with on-track use, we recommend following a simple method:
Place the smartphone about 1 metre behind the exhaust
Offset it by around 20 cm to the side, to avoid the direct flow of gases
Take the measurement with the engine warm
Hold the engine speed steady for a few seconds
For Vaison Piste: 6,000 rpm — if you have no rev counter, floor it.
For other circuits: at 3/4 of the engine's rev range.
This method gives you an indicative value, close to the testing conditions used on track. The results should remain a reference point — the goal being to anticipate and adjust your vehicle's setup before your visit.
